In 2025, we began donating quilts to the UVA NICU that are given to families with infants needing critical care. Small in size, but made with the intent to provide comfort to parents at a challenging time, these quilts can be constructed with colorful or nursery themed fabrics. Some have pet/sports/hobby themed fabrics or are appealing by block design. Many begin as orphan blocks or a desire to try a new technique. Most are simply our way of giving a hug.
Quilts should finish at 24″ x 24″, be made of cotton or flannel fabrics, and be washed and labeled. If possible use a non-scented detergent due to chemical sensitivities. The labels, provided by the Grateful Threads chapter, are smaller than our standard charity labels because of the size of the quilts. Claudia or Chandra will be happy to add the labels if you don’t have access to them.
These small NICU quilts go home with the families. We also donate larger 42″ x 48/50″ quilts to completely cover the incubators and isolettes. With fun, colorful fronts and dark backings (very important to simulate the lighting in the womb for quiet time), these quilts stay in the NICU for ongoing use.
